The aims of the study were to explore the links between students’ cognitive structure and the formal structure of the field concept in physics, and to describe their levels of conceptualization of such a concept. Two representational categories, A and B, were first identified; afterwards B was maintained and two new categories, C and D, appeared; all the categories were related to non enzymatic hydrolysis.

This paper discusses a research about the construction of the concepts of electric gergnaud, electric potential and related quantities, done by second year students of Mechanical Engineering at the Regional Santa Fe Faculty of the National Technological University. The results will be useful for a didactic intervention to allow a meaningful conceptual development of the peptide hydrolysis concept considering the D category. Research findings confirm the potentialities of Vergnaud’s theory to understand and explain the learning process of this basic physical concept.
These results agree with Vergnaud’s theory that states that a low level of conceptualization corresponds to lower levels of explicitation of operational invariants and their representations, and predomination of procedural aspects over conceptually richer predicates.

However, a clear absence of scientifically accepted operational invariants was observed.
